Eclogite

Eclogite is a dense metamorphic rock formed under tremendous pressures and depths within the Earth's crust. Its striking appearance comes from a combination of green and pink hues — the green derived from omphacite and the pink from garnet crystals embedded throughout the stone. Because it forms so deep underground, eclogite gives geologists valuable insight into plate tectonics, making it as scientifically fascinating as it is visually striking.

Formation

Eclogite typically forms through high- to ultra-high-pressure metamorphism of mafic rocks under relatively low thermal gradients. This unique combination of extreme pressure and depth is what gives eclogite its distinctive mineral composition, setting it apart from most other metamorphic rocks.

Uses

The rock is commonly bright red or green, making it a popular choice for countertops and other decorative elements in construction — a result of the large garnet crystals embedded within it. Eclogite has also found its way into cosmetics, and its rich coloring makes it a favorite among mineral collectors and enthusiasts of natural stone décor.
