Making Turkish Coffee with an Arabic Coffee Dallah

If you are a coffee enthusiast, you have likely explored various brewing styles from around the world. Turkish coffee stands out as one of the most popular varieties, celebrated for its rich flavor and thick texture. Traditionally, it is brewed using a dallah or cezve. In this guide, we walk you through the simple steps to brew authentic Turkish coffee at home using a traditional coffee dallah.

  1. Choose the Right Coffee: Turkish coffee is traditionally made using Arabica beans with a sweet, fruity profile. For best results, use freshly roasted beans or convenient pre-ground Turkish coffee.
  2. Grind the Coffee: If using whole beans, grind them to an ultra-fine consistency—finer than standard espresso.
  3. Measure Coffee and Water: Use a 1:2 ratio (e.g., one tablespoon of coffee to two tablespoons of water), adjusting to your preferred strength.
  4. Add to the Dallah: Combine the coffee and water inside the dallah, stirring well to distribute evenly.
  5. Heat on Low: Place the dallah on low heat, allowing the coffee to infuse slowly without boiling.
  6. Wait for the Foam: Allow a rich, velvety foam (known as kahve köpüğü) to form and gently rise to the top before removing from heat.
  7. Pour and Serve: Pour slowly into your cup to preserve the delicate foam, serving hot to enjoy its rich texture and flavor.
