Moaragh Choub: The Masterpiece Art of Iranian Wood Marquetry

The term Moaragh literally translates to patched, piece-by-piece, and veined, fundamentally referring to anything adorned with natural veins and textures. Among Iran's rich artistic heritage, Moaragh Choub (Wood Marquetry) stands out as one of the most magnificent and delicate handicrafts in the world.

This peerless art holds a special place in Iranian culture, with some of the strongest and most intricate wood marquetry masterpieces globally belonging to Iranian masters. The craft is meticulously formed by bringing together various types of tree woods featuring a vast spectrum of natural colors — closely related to Khatamkari, Persia's celebrated inlay art using wood, bone, and metal.

Classification and Crafting Process

According to the classification of traditional arts by the Iran Cultural Heritage Organization, Moaragh Choub is categorized under industrial arts, specifically within wooden works and wood-cutting sections. Key aspects of the process include:

The Essence of Wood Marquetry

Ultimately, wood marquetry is the fine art of gathering small, colorful pieces of wood according to a pre-arranged design. By expertly fitting these pieces together, artists elevate the visual appeal of the pattern, creating breathtaking visual depth solely through the organic beauty of wood.
