Understanding Buddha Statues: History, Meanings, and Postures | Craftihouse
About the Buddha: Life History and Symbolic Postures
The Buddha was born in 563 B.C. in Nepal as Siddhartha, son of King Suddhodana of the Sakyas and Queen Maya. After experiencing palace luxuries and marrying Princess Yasodhara, he encountered the realities of human suffering at age 29. Leaving his royal life behind, he became an ascetic monk and eventually attained perfect illumination (Bodhi) while meditating under a sacred fig tree. He spent 44 years teaching before passing away at Kusinagara at age 80.
Representations of Buddha often feature specific hand gestures known as mudras. For instance, the dispelling fear and blessing pose—where the right palm faces outward—is known as the abhaya mudra. He is also recognized as Amoghasiddhi, one of the five Celestial Buddhas.
Buddha Statues: Meaning of Postures and Poses
Reclining Buddha
The reclining Buddha depicts him lying on his right side with his head supported by a pillow or his hand. While it can signify resting, it most commonly represents his final moments entering Nirvana.
Sitting Buddha
The sitting Buddha is the most prevalent depiction, symbolizing meditation, teaching, or enlightenment. Key positions include:
- Virasana (Hero’s Pose): Legs crossed with the sole of one foot turned upward.
- Vajrasana (Diamond/Lotus Pose): Legs folded with both soles facing upward, representing a receptive meditative state.
- Pralambanasana (European Pose): Seated upright with feet resting on the floor.
Standing Buddha
The standing Buddha signifies a pause in travel, often representing the dispelling of conflict or a transition from meditation to teaching the Four Noble Truths. Planted feet indicate readiness for his journey.
Walking Buddha
Rare and predominantly found in Thailand, the walking Buddha features one foot forward in motion, symbolizing inner grace, peace, and spiritual journeys.
Laughing Buddha
Depicting a smiling, stout figure with an exposed belly, the Laughing Buddha (Hotei) symbolizes happiness, good fortune, and abundance. Tradition says that rubbing his belly brings prosperity and joy.
